Zanesville Thursday Music Club
“Music, Notes of Our Lives”
Since its inception in 1909, the Thursday Music Club has been very active in the musical life of Zanesville and Muskingum County. The club offers music activities for all ages. A monthly music study group meeting for adults meets on the first Tuesday of the month. There is a very long background story about the Thursday Music Club that meets on Tuesday! The Thursday Music Club is a 501 C (3) non profit organization. It has an endowment fund at the Muskingum County Community Foundation.
Development and encouragement of youth involved in music is one or the club’s priorities. They sponsor the Junior Music Club for Eighth Grade students and younger which culminates in a Festival Recital each spring in Elson Hall on the Ohio University Zanesville Campus. Each year they offer a Summer Music Camp Scholarship Competition for high school music students.
The Thursday Music Club started the Zanesville Concert Association in 1938. The ZCA is the premier presenter of world-class musicians to the Zanesville Community.
The music club has sponsored a performance each December of Handel’s Messiah Oratorio by the Zanesville Civic Chorus and Orchestra since 1929. Since 1989 the club has also sponsored a community Handbell Festival the Sunday evening before Thanksgiving. In recent years the club has partnered with Secrest Auditorium to present Bach to Broadway at Secrest Auditorium featuring talented local musicians from the Thursday Music Club.
