The Zanesville Art Center recently signed a contract with the George Eastman House for the nationally traveling exhibition “Seeing Ourselves: Masterpieces of American Photography from George Eastman House Collection.”  The exhibition will consist of 155 original photographs dating from 1850 through 1986.  Included will be masterworks depicting momentous events in American history, such as Alexander Gardner’s  1862 image, “President Lincoln on the Battle Field of Antietam,” and Timothy O’Sullivan’s 1863 image, “A Harvest of Death, Gettysburg, Pennsylvania.” There will be landscapes by Ansel Adams and Carlton Watkins’ 1861 photograph of Yosemite.  Family groups and portraits will also be included; these include Alfred Stieglitz’s “Georgia O’Keeffe,” Nickolas Murray’s 1945 portrait of Babe Ruth, and Philippe Halsman’s famed portrait of Marilyn Monroe that appeared on the cover of Life Magazine in 1952.

The exhibition will appear at the Zanesville Art Center February 9 – April 6, 2008.  At present, it appears that Zanesville will be the only Midwestern venue for this major exhibition.  The exhibition is part of an Art Center series intended to bring the best of historic and contemporary American art to Southeastern Ohio.  It is hoped that this exhibition will draw visitors to Zanesville and provide regional school children and families with the chance to view American history first-hand. Work has begun on collaboration with Ohio and West Virginia museums and historic sites to create a network of historic photography exhibits in winter 2008.

Other major photographers whose work will be represented in the exhibition include Richard Avedon, Margaret Bourke-White, Mathew Brady, Imogen Cunningham, Edward S. Curtis, Walker Evans, Lewis Hine, Dorothea Lange, Edward Steichen, Paul Strand, and Edward Weston.

“Seeing Ourselves: Masterpieces of American Photography from George Eastman House Collection” was organized by George Eastman House International Museum of Photography and Film that was made possible through a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts as part of the American Masterpieces program.

Additional information will be forthcoming.
