Bicentennial Legacy Monument

print this listing

The Bicentennial Legacy Monument recognizes four notable figures in the Zanesville area from 1779 - 1997.  The first figure is John McIntire, the founder of Zanesville.  Through his strong will, Zanesville developed into a prosperous town.  His legacy lives on through the McIntire Scholarship Fund which provides grants to approximately 150 students every year.

The second figure is Noah Norris who is known for enlisting in the first black regiment recruited in Ohio during the Civil War.  Norris honors all veterans who have contributed to the growth of the Zanesville area and our nation.

Zane Grey is the third figure of the monument.  He was a western romance writer who sold over 130 million copies.  The writer's great grandfather was Colonel Ebenezer Zane, the person for whom Zanesville is named.

John Glenn is the figure with his hand reaching toward the sky.  Glenn is the first American to orbit the Earth as well as a four-time senator.  He returned to space in 1998 at the age of 77.  Glenn grew up in New Concord where he attended Muskingum College.

The Monument is located in Zane's Landing Park in downtown Zanesville, along the Muskingum River.
